Rear Facing Car Seats – A Newborn Travel Safety Must

Federal regulations require the all infants must be in a car seat when traveling in an automobile, and specifiy rear facing car seats for babies under twenty pounds. In fact, you will need to buy a rear facing car seat and have it installed properly in your car before you can bring your baby home from the hospital.

When to use a rear-facing care seat

When purchasing a car seat, make sure that you have a proper rear facing car seat for your first one. Or, get a convertible model that can be rear-facing initially and then be switched to a front-facing model as the child grows older.

Remember that your child must be in the rear-facing car seat until at least twenty pounds, although they can stay in it longer (up to thirty to thirty-five pounds depending upon the car seat). Most pediatricians actually recommend using the rear-facing position as long as possible, since it is by far the safest.

What’s so special about rear facing car seats?

  • Rear facing car seats provide greater protection for the neck and spine during an accident because it spreads the impact over a greater area
  • This position protects the neck better against snapping in a forward crash
  • The angle of the reclining position in a rear facing car seat is more comfortable for a newborn child whose head and neck can’t yet support themselves well
  • The restraint system, generally a five-point shoulder restraint system, is sized and designed for comfort and to distribute crash force to the strongest, safest parts of the infant’s body to minimize injury.
