Baby Halloween Costumes – Cute as Bug…or Whatever

Baby’s first Halloween requires a costume, doesn’t it? After all, you can’t let the moment pass without baby Halloween costumes and plenty of snapshots. The choices are astronomical, with everything from angels to zebras available.

Snow White, Barney, doctor, scarecrow, unicorn, sunflower, leopard, rag doll, dog, panda, what isn’t available in Halloween costumes for babies these days?

Get an age-appropriate costume

Before buying a Halloween costume, consider the age of your baby. Newborns will do best in one of the cute, dressed-up versions of a sleeper or bunting. These are comfortable and can be surprisingly elaborate, with detachable fairy or dragon wings, antennae attached to tie-on caps and fluffy trim. Infants should never have anything over their face, however, so steer clear of anything with a mask for children under two years old.

Although elaborate trims and attachments may be tempting when choosing a baby Halloween costume, remember that safety is most important. Check to make sure any trim is securely stitched on and can’t be pulled off or choked on by babies. Feathers and marabou should also be avoided, since these can be sucked into the baby’s lungs.

Be practical

Toddlers may enjoy wearing the old “footie pajama” style of Halloween costumes that come with a mask for trick-or-treating, but that can also be worn for playtime or sleeping in. Remember, though, that no matter how cute the Halloween trick-or-treater, he still has to go to the bathroom or have a diaper change sometime, so make sure any costume you get for your baby is easy to get out of when the need arises!
