Tips for Buying a Baby Crib – Night, Night

Your baby while spend two-thirds of his first six months sleeping, so you can’t underestimate the importance of a baby crib. Our tips for buying a baby crib will give you several guidelines to keep in mind when you are buying yours so that your newborn can rest in safety and comfort.

There are so many gorgeous designer cribs to look at today that it’s easy to focus on decorating a nursery and to neglect the practical side of crib buying. You can find beautiful baby beds that fit all your needs, however, and still have a nursery that evokes “oohs” and “aahs.”

Key Elements for a Quality Crib

  • Proper Slats. The slats on any crib should be spaced no more than 2-3/8 inches apart. Any farther, and babies could get their head or limbs stuck in between them.
  • Snug Mattress Fit. The baby mattress should fit snugly into the frame. If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame, your infant could get stuck there.
  • Secure, Easy Release Sides. The sides should drop down with an easy release mechanism that is quiet (so as not to wake the sleeping darling!) and that can be released with one hand when you are holding your baby. It should also be secure enough, however, that it can’t accidentally be released if the baby jiggles the sides.
  • Adjustable Mattress Height. Setting the mattress high enough for you to easily reach an infant is important, but it is imperative that you be able to lower the mattress when baby can sit up so that he can’t climb out of the crib.
  • Versatility. Decorating a nursery means considering how quickly the baby will grow; do you want a room that will still suit him as he gets older? If so, look for a convertible baby crib that can become a toddler bed or day bed so that you won’t have to buy new baby furniture in just a few years.

A Few More Things to Consider

Your crib will be the focal point of the nursery, so take into consideration the size of the room and where you will be placing the crib. If the nursery is very small or you will be putting the baby in your bedroom with you for a while, you might want to consider a portable crib or square baby crib. These take up less wall space but still provide plenty of room for the baby to sleep.
